Animals specially bred in farms or laboratories and used in scientific research, experiments, and biological tests are called laboratory animals.
Many drugs and treatment methods undergo trials and research before being made available. Animal experiments consist of experiments in the field of medicine and those conducted in the laboratory environment.
The main fields of study where animal experiments are conducted include medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and basic biology; the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases in humans and animals; the production and usability control of substances such as drugs, vaccines, toxins, antitoxins, and antisera used in humans and animals; research on physiological and etiological events in humans and animals; environmental protection and toxicological research against environmental pollution; and forensic medicine studies.
Important areas where laboratory animals are used:
- Biological, pathological, biochemical, physiological, urological, bacteriological, parasitological, hematological, pharmacological, toxicological, bio-genetic, and bio-immunological research fields,
- Pharmaceutical industry,
- Used in the development of surgical techniques.
In studies, many animals are used such as mice, rats, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, ferrets, and monkeys (non-human primates).
In animal experiments, the welfare of the laboratory animal and its ability to live in a healthy environment are important factors. Researchers certified in this field must comply with the Regulation on the Working Procedures and Principles of Animal Experiments Ethics Committees currently in force.
There are five basic freedoms that ensure the welfare of laboratory animals. These are:
- Meeting the need for balanced nutrition,
- Providing a healthy and clean living environment
- Freedom from disease, injury, and pain
- Ability to exhibit normal behavior
- Not being exposed to stress and fear
