These two devices are often confused, but their functions are entirely different. Laminar flow cabinets (clean benches) are designed solely to protect the sample or product inside the cabinet and do not provide protection for personnel. Therefore, they are not suitable for handling hazardous pathogens. Biosafety cabinets, on the other hand, are designed to protect personnel, the environment, and the sample from infectious risks.

The selection of a biosafety cabinet should be based on the laboratory’s risk assessment, including the hazard classification of the agents being handled, whether volatile toxic chemicals or radioisotopes will be used, and the facility’s exhaust air infrastructure. To ensure compliance and reliability, the cabinet should hold internationally recognized certifications such as NSF/ANSI 49 or EN 12469.

What Is a Biosafety Cabinet (BSC)? What Are Its Classes and Features?

In microbiology, clinical research, and drug development processes, ensuring laboratory safety while working with hazardous biological agents is one of the most critical priorities. Biosafety Cabinets (BSCs) are isolated sterile workspaces that protect laboratory personnel (operators), the biological sample being handled, and the external environment from infectious aerosols and cross-contamination by using specially directed airflow systems and high-efficiency HEPA/ULPA filters.
Biosafety cabinets are divided into three main classes according to the Biosafety Level of the work being carried out (BSL-1, BSL-2, BSL-3, or BSL-4) and application requirements:

1. Class I Biosafety Cabinets (Personnel and Environmental Protection)

Class I cabinets are designed to protect personnel and the laboratory environment. They create a constant inward airflow to prevent biological aerosols from escaping and discharge exhaust air after passing it through a HEPA filter.
Important Note: This system does not provide sample protection. Since the incoming air from outside is not filtered, there is a risk of product contamination.
Applications: They are generally preferred for centrifugation or mixing processes involving low- and medium-risk biological agents (BSL-1 and BSL-2), where sample sterility is not critical.

2. Class II Biosafety Cabinets (Maximum Integration and Protection)

This is the most widely used type of BSC in clinical and research laboratories worldwide. Operating with the principle of laminar airflow, it provides simultaneous complete protection for personnel, the environment, and the product (sample). The air drawn into the cabinet is passed through a HEPA filter before reaching the work area, preventing contamination of samples.
Subtypes (A1, A2, B1, B2): These cabinets are divided into subtypes according to how much of the air inside the cabinet is recirculated back into the laboratory and how much is exhausted to the external exhaust system (duct). In particular, Class II Type B2 cabinets exhaust 100% of the air outside, allowing work with toxic chemicals.
Applications: They are the standard choice for cell culture studies, microbiological inoculations, and medium-/high-risk pathogen research (BSL-2 and BSL-3).

3. Class III Biosafety Cabinets (Glove Box - Full Isolation)

These are fully enclosed, gas-tight isolation systems with the highest level of safety standards. Operators handle samples through heavy-duty gloves integrated into the cabinet panel. Air entering and leaving the cabinet is sterilized by passing through double HEPA or ULPA filters.
Applications: They are specially manufactured for maximum-security laboratories where high-risk (BSL-4) agents that are deadly and easily transmitted by aerosols, such as Ebola and Marburg virus, are studied.
