Description

Biosafety Cabinets: Protect Your Personnel and Samples

Ensuring safety in laboratory environments is of critical importance. Biosafety cabinets (BSCs) are essential laboratory equipment designed to protect personnel, samples, and the environment from contamination when working with hazardous biological agents.

To provide appropriate protection for different application needs and risk levels, biosafety cabinets are classified into several categories.

Class I Biosafety Cabinets

Class I biosafety cabinets provide protection for personnel and the environment. Thanks to inward airflow and a HEPA-filtered exhaust system, they protect the user from biological aerosols. However, they do not provide product (sample) protection. They are generally preferred for work involving low- to moderate-risk biological agents.

Class II Biosafety Cabinets

Class II biosafety cabinets are the most commonly used type of BSC and provide a high level of protection for personnel, products, and the environment. They operate based on the principle of laminar airflow; inward airflow and downward HEPA-filtered air protect samples from contamination.
The exhaust air is also passed through a HEPA filter and safely released into the environment. Class II cabinets are available in different subtypes such as A1, A2, B1, and B2, and the appropriate model is selected based on the application.

Class III Biosafety Cabinets

Class III biosafety cabinets provide the highest level of protection. They are designed for working with high-risk and highly hazardous biological agents. They offer a completely enclosed working area, and operators perform procedures using gloves integrated into the cabinet.
In these cabinets, both the inlet and exhaust air are HEPA-filtered, and they typically feature a dual HEPA filtration system.

Choosing the Right Biosafety Cabinet

Selecting the appropriate biosafety cabinet depends on the risk assessment conducted in your laboratory and the nature of the work being performed. For solutions best suited to your needs and for detailed information, please feel free to contact us.
