What is a Biobank?

Biobanks are organizations where biological materials and their associated information are collected, stored, processed, and distributed. Due to the growing awareness of their power to answer relevant research questions, they are becoming increasingly important for a range of organizations in biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry, and medical research.
The term “Biobank” refers not only to the collection and storage of biological samples but also to medical and biomedical data. Biobanks can be established not only for research purposes but also for therapeutic and forensic use. In this context, biobanks may include biological samples such as tissues, organs, serum, plasma, urine, saliva, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA), proteins, and cell lines. The data associated with these samples include lists explaining the sample’s history, sampling method, processing, and related analysis results. These data are used for developing new treatments and/or new technologies and in scientific publications. Samples in biobanks are preserved under quality assurance systems and follow ethical and legal regulations that protect the rights of donors. This requires excellent management of a wide variety of samples such as blood, tissue, saliva, and DNA, integration with electronic medical/health records (HIS: Hospital Information System), and compliance with relevant regulatory environments such as FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and similar requirements. A full sample inventory, including tracking of aliquots, pooled samples, and samples processed and then stored for experiments, is required in real-time. Other requirements often include logistics management and cold chain monitoring.
Most modern laboratory information management systems (Lab Management Software) have features or add-ons to facilitate biobanking.
