Nitrogen tanks are systems that allow biological samples to be stored for many years without deterioration and without losing their structure. According to current publications, products can continue to be stored without deterioration for more than thirty years.
Nitrogen tanks can be grouped into two subcategories: biological sample storage and liquid nitrogen storage & transport.

Purpose of Liquid Nitrogen Tanks

They are used to create a cryogenic environment by storing in liquid nitrogen (boiling point -196°C) at room temperature (25°C), in liquid and vapor phases, and to stock samples that need to be preserved at very low temperatures.

Features of Liquid Nitrogen Tanks

Liquid nitrogen tanks generally consist of inner and outer structures, with vacuum application and jacket insulation between them. This ensures that liquid nitrogen and the samples inside are protected from ambient temperature, even at extremely low storage conditions.

Classification of Liquid Nitrogen Tanks by Purpose

Liquid nitrogen tanks are classified into two groups: liquid nitrogen transport & storage and biological sample storage.

Liquid Nitrogen Storage and Transport Tanks (Dewars)

  • Worthington, Taylor Wharton Dewar tanks of 4 L, 5 L, 10 L, 25 L, 35 L, and 50 L capacity allow nitrogen transfer via pouring or using pressure-boosting equipment (LD25, LD35, LD50).
  • Used for collecting nitrogen from the producer and delivering it to the facility.
  • Made of aluminum inside and out, with low evaporation rates. The space between inner and outer walls is vacuum-insulated using high technology and super-insulation methods.

Pressurized or Non-Pressurized Liquid Nitrogen Storage & Transport Cylinders

  • Worthington, Taylor Wharton, Auguste Cryogenics stainless steel cylinders with low evaporation rates, available in 70 L, 120 L, 160 L, 180 L, 240 L capacities, in non-pressurized or self-pressurizing versions, on wheels, suitable for liquid or gas nitrogen.
  • The inner and outer body is made of stainless steel, with multilayer super-insulation and high-quality vacuum between them.

Biological Sample Storage Tanks

These tanks, used for storing samples in the vapor or liquid phase of nitrogen, provide long-term sample preservation with stable temperatures and low evaporation rates.
Depending on the sample storage method:

LABS Series (Laboratory Archiving Biological Storage Tank)

Known as Worthington, Taylor Wharton’s biological archiving and biobanking storage series.
A storage series with high sample safety, featuring a hinged lid system and an internal lid sensor. These tanks include liquid nitrogen reservoirs, rotating turntables, automatic filling, dual temperature sensors, and true vapor-phase storage. In case of critical temperature drops, audible and visual alarms are triggered.
The inner and outer body is made of stainless steel, vacuum-insulated with advanced technology and fitted with an insulation jacket, ensuring low evaporation rates.
Samples can be loaded onto the rotating aluminum turntable, which provides rapid heat transfer and has four compartments.
Using the rack system, samples can be loaded onto the turntable. Five models are available with capacities of 19,500 vials, 37,700 vials, 41,600 vials, 79,300 vials, and 93,000 vials (2 ml). Different rack designs are available for cord blood, bone marrow, heart valves, tissue, and stem cells.

K Series (High-Capacity Sample Storage Tank)

The Worthington, Taylor Wharton K series can be used in liquid or vapor phase, suitable for general and quarantine applications, designed for lower-capacity sample storage.
Made entirely of stainless steel inside and out, with vacuum and super-insulation technology applied between the walls.
Features a hinged lid (except 3K model) with a sensor for maximum sample safety.
Includes an automatic nitrogen filling system (except 3K) that continuously monitors nitrogen levels. Dual temperature probes allow continuous monitoring, with visual and audible alarms at critical temperatures.
Available in 4 models with capacities of 3,024 vials, 10,400 vials, 24,050 vials, and 38,350 vials. Different rack designs are available for cord blood, bone marrow, heart valves, tissue, and stem cells.

LS Series (Automatic Filling Sample Storage Tank)

The Worthington, Taylor Wharton LS Series laboratory tanks are designed for storing 2 ml vials using cryo boxes.
A rack system for loading cryo boxes is included as standard.
They provide low evaporation rates and long-term storage. The spider-design interior makes it easy to insert and remove racks.
The optional automatic filling system enables the tank to draw nitrogen directly from a pressurized cylinder. An additional temperature sensor can also be installed for continuous internal monitoring.

CX Series (Vapor Phase Transport System – Dry Shipper)

The Worthington, Taylor Wharton CX Series is designed for transporting biological samples in nitrogen vapor phase.
Equipped with absorbent pads that retain nitrogen for vapor-phase transport. Available in two versions: with replaceable (CXR) or non-replaceable (CX) absorbent pads. These tanks comply with IATA standards (PI202 – Packaging Instruction 202).
Features a durable aluminum body inside and out, resistant to impacts during transport. Includes high-performance vacuum and insulation jacket. Optional datalogger can be attached to the lid for real-time temperature monitoring.
