What Is a Cleanroom?

According to ISO 14644-1:2015, Cleanroom Systems are defined as “rooms in which the concentration of airborne particles is controlled and classified, and which are designed, constructed, and operated to minimize the introduction, generation, and retention of particles inside the room.”

Why Are Cleanroom Consumables Important?

If consumables suitable for the requirements of the cleanroom in use are not selected correctly, both the room conditions and the work carried out in that area are put at risk. For this reason, using the correct cleanroom products is extremely important. When inappropriate cleanroom products are used, you may be forced to discard a product that you have carefully manufactured, leading to loss of labor, time, and raw materials.

Where Are Cleanroom Consumables Used?

Cleanrooms designed for various sectors must be operated with their specific consumables;

In Advanced Technology Industries:

Microelectronics, chips, nanotechnology, optics, sensors, and similar product manufacturing
  • Improving product quality
  • Increasing production efficiency
  • Using less material in various products

In the Manufacturing of Hygienic Products:

Pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biotechnology, food industry, and medical equipment manufacturing
  • Preventing contamination of products by microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, and mold
  • Extending product shelf life
  • Improving product quality
  • Preventing cross-contamination

In Hospitals:

Operating rooms, intensive care units, and sterilization units
  • Preventing hospital-acquired infections
  • Preventing the spread of infectious diseases
  • Preventing cross-contamination

What Should We Consider When Selecting Cleanroom Consumables?

  • Requirements of the manufactured product
  • Production process
  • Number of materials used during production processes
  • Availability of cleaning and sterilization services for reusable materials

Situations Where Single-Use Products Should Be Preferred:

  • When working with toxic or biologically hazardous products
  • When working with harmful chemicals
  • When cleaning services for reusable materials are not available
  • When limited material requirements make single-use products more economical than reusable ones

What Types of Materials Are Used in Cleanroom Products?

Polyester Material

Properties: Elastic, lightweight, and durable; high resistance to tearing and abrasion; airtight; does not absorb liquids; not heat resistant.

Polypropylene Material

Properties: Does not absorb water, 100% moisture resistant, highly durable, does not rot, high electrical insulation capacity, elongation capacity of approximately 30%. Very high air permeability, moderate thermal insulation.

Cellulose Material

Properties: Made from synthetic cellulose fibers, high water absorption capacity, high air permeability, moderate thermal insulation, low flexibility.

Cotton Material

Properties: Can absorb up to six times its weight in moisture, soft and durable, does not generate static electricity, stronger when wet than dry, highly resistant to abrasion and washing. Contains no chemicals compared to synthetic fibers such as polyester; it is a natural fiber.
Material Cleanroom Class
ISO GMP
Polyester 3-8 A/B
Polypropylene 6-7 C/D
Polyester 6-7 C/D
Polyester / Cellulose 6-7 C/D
Viscose 6-7 C/D
Particle emission in a cleanroom can be evaluated based on the material from which the wipe is made;
Lowest Particle Emission: Polyester → Cellulose → Polypropylene → Cotton

Cleanroom Wipes

The most common cause of particle problems in cleanrooms is the incorrect selection of wipes.
Cleanroom wipes are divided into three categories;
  • Non-Woven Wipes - sterile - non-sterile - gamma irradiated
  • Knitted Wipes - sterile - non-sterile - gamma irradiated
  • Presaturated Wipes - sterile - non-sterile - gamma irradiated
The abrasion resistance, electrostatic discharge capacity, particle emission, ionic content, absorbency, weight, and reaction to certain chemicals—as well as the weave and cutting method of the wipe—are all very important; stitched, microfiber, non-woven, woven, sealed-edge cut, laser cut, heat cut, cold cut, and similar techniques.
The wipes with the highest cleanliness level and lowest particle emission are 100% polyester knitted wipes. Their main advantages are durability, resistance to tearing, very low particle emission, softness, and suitability for gamma sterilization.
Knitted Polyester products can be reviewed for more detailed information.
If, in addition to these properties, high absorbency and cost efficiency are required, non-woven polyester cellulose wipes can also be preferred.
Non-Woven products can be reviewed for more detailed information.
Presaturated wipes are available in various alcohol saturation levels, sterile or non-sterile forms, and in different sizes and materials such as meltblown polypropylene, polyester cellulose, and polyester knit.
Presaturated products can be reviewed for more detailed information.

Cleanroom Equipment

As mentioned for wipes, great care must also be taken with swabs, work surface pads, notebooks, paper, and similar materials.
Supporting Products can be reviewed for more detailed information.
In addition, the selection of mop and bucket systems and disinfectants requires special attention. Cross-contamination caused by chemicals and the materials used together may result in serious and undesirable damage to a cleanroom that has been maintained with such care.
Mops are available in four types;
  • Sterile Single-Use
  • Non-Sterile Single-Use
  • Presaturated Mops
  • Autoclavable Mops
Depending on the cleanroom area in square meters, heavy-, medium-, or light-weight mops can be selected. Light-weight mops can clean an area of 14 m² with a single mop, medium-weight mops 21 m², and heavy mops 28 m². Mops that provide 99.9% surface cleanliness down to 0.1 microns should be preferred.
For cleaning carts, equipment designed to reduce risk and waste, increase productivity, and protect cleanrooms should be selected. The ability to attach and remove mop heads safely, easily, and quickly without hand contact is one of the most important considerations.
